چکیده

This paper investigates the role of general attention-shifting mechanisms in children’s early adjective learning. A novel version of an adjective-learning paradigm was used to probe whether attentional mechanisms could account for early adjective learning without recourse to high-level syntactic knowledge. Twoand 3-year-olds participated. One condition removed all syntactic information by presenting words in incorrect syntactic order, but with explicit naming of known properties. According to the attention-shifting account, activation of past learned associations through the mention of known words should focus attention on the right association: novel adjective to novel property. Younger children with less linguistic experience successfully learned novel adjectives in this condition, supporting the attentional account. We discuss the attention-shifting mechanism by analogy to attentional highlighting, which accounts for the phenomenon of highlighting in the adult associative learning literature.

Attentional Control and Early Word Learning

There has been increasing interest in the role of early attention in the context of word learning. There has also been growing interest in attentional differences between bilinguals and monolinguals. The present study examined the relationship between mutual exclusivity and attentional control by comparing bilingual children whose attentional control is relatively advanced to agematched monolin...

Pragmatically Framed Cross-Situational Noun Learning Using Computational Reinforcement Models

Cross-situational learning and social pragmatic theories are prominent mechanisms for learning word meanings (i.e., word-object pairs). In this paper, the role of reinforcement is investigated for early word-learning by an artificial agent. When exposed to a group of speakers, the agent comes to understand an initial set of vocabulary items belonging to the language used by the group. Both cros...

Learning to Associate Object Categories and Label Categories: A Self-Organising Model

We present a model of early lexical acquisition. Successful word learning builds on pre-existing, self-organising categorisation capacities and through joint attentional events between the infant and the caregiver. Our model successfully accounts for the emergence of a lexical constraint, taxonomic responding, as well as a steep increase in the rate of acquisition of words, without any need for...

Exploring the Developmental Feedback Loop: Word Learning in Neural Networks and Toddlers

Early word learning may be supported by a developmental feedback loop: the kind of words a child learns early on support the development of attentional biases, which in turn facilitate further word learning. In neural network simulations and a longitudinal study of toddlers we investigated how the emergence of an attentional bias to shape in word learning impacts vocabulary growth with respect ...

Attentional focus during learning impacts N170 ERP responses to an artificial script.

Reading instruction can direct attention to different unit sizes in print-to-speech mapping, ranging from grapheme-phoneme to whole-word relationships. Thus, attentional focus during learning might influence brain mechanisms recruited during reading, as indexed by the N170 response to visual words. To test this, two groups of adults were trained to read an artificial script under instructions d...
